A Festival Afternoon

The California Youth Symphony is pleased to continue our very popular March Festival Concert series, at which we feature our Intermediate String Ensemble, the Wind Symphony, and the CYS Associate Orchestra. The Associate Orchestra will present an ambitious program including Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece Capriccio Italien, as well as Schubert’s Rosamunde Overture. We will also be highlighting the program with two winners of our Associate Orchestra Concerto Competition.

Associate Orchestra Concerto Competition Winners


Neil Vaishampayan is a 16-year-old junior at Cupertino High School. Neil has played the French Horn for five years, and studies with David Dufour. His interest in music started with learning piano, and was introduced to the horn in middle school. Soon after, Neil played in the All-State Honor Band at the 2015 CASMEC. Since then, Neil has played in many orchestras, including the SJYS Chamber and Philharmonic Orchestras, and now the CYS Associate Orchestra. Neil is preparing for studying computer science in college, as well as being part of his school’s FRC robotics team. In his free time, Neil enjoys reading as well as playing video games.

Jasper Wang, 15, is a freshman at Palo Alto High School. He studies clarinet with Mark Brandenburg and previously with Susan Macy. His achievements include second place in the 2017 International Golden Era of Romantic Music Competition in American Fine Arts Festival and first place in the 2017 USIMC Young Artist Award. He had the honor to perform in Carnegie Hall in Oct, 2017.

Associate Orchestra Concerto Competition


California Youth Symphony's annual CONCERTO COMPETITION for the Associate Orchestra offers its current students a special challenge and an opportunity for public recognition. All students in the Associate Orchestra are encouraged to compete. One of two winners will debut in this Festival Afternoon concert.
