Janice Gho

Senior Orchestra Concerto Competition Winner

Janice Gho began studying the double bass at the age of 13 with Bruce Moyer after many years of playing the piano. This is Janice’s third year in the California Youth Symphony, and her second year as co-principal bassist. Through her experiences with CYS, Janice has continuously been encouraged to participate in orchestras across the state and nation.

Most recently, in the summer of 2014, Janice had the incredible opportunity to participate in the National Youth Orchestra of the USA, beginning with a two-week residency and training with top-notch faculty and players, followed by a coast-to-coast tour of the US in eight different cities with guest artists David Robertson and Gil Shaham. The orchestra performed in many prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Millennium Park, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Janice will be returning to NYO-USA in the summer of 2015 for a seven-city tour of China.

In previous years, Janice has been principal bassist of the NAfME All-National Honors Orchestra, the California All-State Honors Orchestra, KAMSA Youth Symphony Orchestra, and San Jose Youth Chamber Orchestra. Janice has also participated in the Santa Clara County Honor Band, Stanford Summer Symphony and the UC Berkeley Summer Symphony.

Outside her orchestral activities, Janice also enjoys bringing her music into the community. As co-president of the MUSE Ensemble, a small group of local high school musicians, and as president of the Monta Vista Tri-M Music Honor Society chapter, she often performs at senior centers, hospitals, benefit concerts, and other community events. Janice is currently completing her senior year at Monta Vista High School.
